Last year in Memphis, Tennessee, the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) conducted its 50th General Assembly. Over 2,300 commissioners representing the denomination’s 1,627 churches (plus 305 mission works) and 390,319 members adopted a number of formal resolutions (referred to as overtures) for the life and business of the Church as a whole.
One such resolution proposed by Evangel Presbytery (located in north-central Alabama) and adopted by the Assembly was to empower the Moderator of the Assembly “to appoint a commission to draft a humble petition” to a variety of government officials “condemning the practice of surgical and medical gender reassignment, especially of minors.”
The Stated Clerk of the denomination has sent the product of the Commission’s careful labors to National magistrates (i.e., the President of the United States, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and majority and minority party leaders in Congress). Presbytery Clerks have been encouraged to send the petition to State-level magistrates (i.e., Governors, Legislative leaders, and State Supreme Court Justices). The denomination’s official news source has shared the statement here for public access.
It is our prayer that God will bless this humble petition for the promotion of righteousness, holiness, justice, and life in the United States, South Carolina, and Greenville & Spartanburg Counties.
